On March 8, 1965 the 3rd Battalion 9th Marines waded ashore on China Beach, Da Nang.
These 3,500 US Marines were the first troops to land in Viet Nam.

During the
Vietnam War, the city of Da Nang became the home to a major air base that was
used by both the South Vietnamese and United States air forces.  The Da Nang Air Base
was the most northerly tactical air base in The Republic of Vietnam, just 137 clicks south
of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) located at the 17th parrallel.

Da Nang Harbor, a valued deep water port, was used to off load and stockpile ammunition,
fuel oil, aviation gas and general stores in support of the conflict.

The United States Navy Seabees built piers used to operate task force units of Market Time
and Game Warden.  In February 1969 Mine division 91, including the USS Implicit, tied up
to a market time pier to off load magnetic equipment and supplies in preparation of sweeping
live mines in the Gulf of Tonkin off the North Vietam coast.
