Wooden Ship – Iron Men

Letter writing and card games, shown here, were favorite off duty pastimes in the
General Mess Deck. Other Mess Deck activities included department meetings, movie nights
and of course chow times. The meals served were breakfast, dinner (lunch), supper and
when underway, mid rats (midnight rations).


The General Mess coffee urn and the dish tank behind the door on the right. I have worked
in civilian restaurants since I was discharged from the Navy in 1970 and I have always referred
to the kitchen areas containing automatic dish machines, as 'dish tanks'.
