Tiger Balm Garden
Built in 1935 on Hong Kong Island, the gardens were located on eight acres of hillside
covered with grottoes and pavilions filled with painted statues and models of Chinese gods,
mythical animals, and scenes from fables and parables. An ornate seven-story pagoda
contains Buddhist relics and the ashes of monks and nuns.
Guarding the Gardens from the top of the site is the Tiger Pagoda. Until high-rise buildings
were built in Hong Kong in the 1960s, the seven story Tiger Pagoda was one of Hong Kong's
tallest structures.
These images were taken in 1969 and sadly in
and demolished by a land development company. Only the Tiger Pagoda remains.
