The Commodore, when underway with Mine Division 91, would occasionally signal formation
course and speed changes using voice and signal flag communication commands. These
training drills were used to test the performance ability of each ship's Officer of the Deck,
signalmen and helmsman when engaging an enemy in combat.
Here the Persistent (on the left), the Conflict (on the right), the Endurance (off camera) and the
Implicit (where I stood to take this picture) are responding to the Commodore's drill commands.
