USS Gallant MSO-489 moored to Pier 9 Long Beach Naval Station

The Pacific Fleet of MSOs were berthed at Pier Nine in the West Basin of the Long Beach Harbor
from early 1950s until the naval station closed in 1991 under the Defense Base Closure and
Realignment Act (BRAC) of 1990. The closing of the naval base and shipyard resulted in the
reassignment of 38 naval vessels to other home ports in the United States.

The Port of Long Beach purchased the naval station and shipyard from the United States Navy,
redeveloped the site and today operates one of the largest cargo container shipping terminals
in the world. In 2007 the Port of Long Beach was the second active port in the United States
and the 15th active cargo container port in the world.

All of the naval station and shipyard buildings, structures and piers, including pier nine,
were demolished.

reassignment of the naval vessels and prior to demolition of the buildings and piers

Shown in this image, the Long Beach Naval Shipyard was a major overhaul facility for the
United States Navy. During the 1960s the battleship New Jersy could be seen here for refit.

This image reveals many of the Long Beach Naval Station and Shipyard buildings
and structures on Terminal Island have been demolished. In addition Pier 9 has
been removed from the west basin.

Today, the Hanjin Shipping Company of Korea leases and operates this container shipping facility in
the Long Beach Harbor where the Naval Station (foreground), Naval Shipyard (above) and Pier 9
(to the right in the basin) once stood.  The road on the lower right leads onto the Mole.
